Gone are the days when you had to hold down a button and wind a tiny crank to roll up your film. The digital age has begun and having to get film developed is a thing of the past. But even though it's easier to take pictures, you still have to go through the complicated process of waiting in line at a drugstore's photo kiosk with your memory card to get them printed, or do you? Maybe it's time to look into printing from home.
The main benefit of printing your digital pictures at home is its simplicity. Many of even the cheapest digital photo printers allow you to connect your camera or plug in your memory card and print directly. With photo editing tools built into the menus of new cameras, a computer is usually not even necessary!
Consider it as an investment. Sure the initial cost of a printer may run you a couple hundred bucks, but ultimately it's going to pay off because the cost per photo is drastically cheaper than what you might pay in a store. Sure there's ink you need to buy, but even with the cost of ink and paper, it still ends up being cheaper.
The newest photo printers are able to rival the quality of even the best prints you can get in a store, so this really adds to the reasons of why you should purchase a printer. Depending on the paper you use and the ink you buy, prints can last a very long time, too. Imagine no more having to drive or wait in lines. Photo printers allow you to print without having to wait to pick up your pictures later on. Actually printing of prints is fast, too.
Okay, so now that you're convinced in that you need to buy a printer instead of going to a store, how do you go about choosing which printer to get? One of the biggest things you should consider is the size of the prints you're going to want. Some printers only print 4x6, some let you print as large as 8x10 or even 11x14! There's no point in spending on what you don't need, so be sure to think about what you're buying.
The next thing you'll want to look into is the quality. This is usually measured in DPI (dots per inch). Also a part of the quality is the type of printing the printer does. Dye-sublimation printers use a completely different technique than actual ink or toner. Be sure to research and weigh the options of what you really want.
The last thing you should look for are the printer's features. Are you going to need borderless printing? Double-sided printing? Some printers are easier to use than others, so one of the best things to do is check out the printers in the store. Most places let you print a test page so you can see the quality and speed of each printer. Do a little research and figure out how much ink is going to cost, too. Some printers are cheap, but overprice their ink, while other printers are expensive but their ink is cheap. It's almost always better to just make an investment.
The Benefits Of Printing Photos At Home
Review: Real world Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS
Photoshop CS is no doubt the most momentous Photoshop progress which complements digital photographers. Real world Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS discusses exciting new features for general users, web designers, video editors and digital photographers. This book is authored by Bruce Fraser.
Bruce Fraser is a noted author having co-authored the penultimate Photoshop resource book Real World Photoshop from Peachpit Press. He is also a contributing editor for Mac World plus a regular contributor for CreativePro where he wrote his “Out of Gamut” articles. Fraser is also a co-author of Real World Color Management from Peachpit Press. He has also made a study of human vision and how it relates to reproducible color in photography and photomechanical reproduction. Bruce is a regular speaker and presenter at notable trade shows and conferences as well as Seybold and Thunder Lizard’s Photoshop Conferences. He has also consulted for an extensive series of major photographic and digital imaging companies.
Adobe Photoshop CS is the new version (Version 8) of Adobe Photoshop. It is a part of the newly announced Adobe Creative Suite which combines new versions of Adobe Photoshop CS with ImageReady CS, Adobe illustrator CS, Adobe InDesign CS, Adobe GoLive CS, Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional, and the new "Version Cue" file version manager, which lets you track integrations quickly and locate files easily.
Camera RAW part of Photoshop 7 Adobe Photoshop Camera RAW & JPEG 2000 Plug-in Bundle is now an integrated part of Photoshop CS. This has added substantial power to Photoshop CS. JPEG 2000 delivers superior quality for the same compression ratios. Conversely, since no camera support JPEG 2000, support is available through a separate plug-in that ships with the software.
Depending on the camera brand, Raw may come in different flavors. Adobe Photoshop CS covers most RAW formats available today. However, RAW data may not be always read accurately. For example, the white balance of Nikon Coolpix 5000 images may have unnatural result which is not a case with Nikon Capture 3.5. To fix the white balance, click in a non-specular white area followed by a minor tint adjustment. Supplementary adjustments can be made through the advanced “Calibration” tab. The “Adjust” tab controls exposure, shadow, brightness and contrast sliders. Albeit Photoshop CS features now a new Histogram Palette, the RAW dialog box also features live histograms.
Noise reduction is not a problem with Photoshop CS. It has the color noise reduction and luminance smoothing sliders which allow you to reduce colors and luminance noise. Luminance noise should be use with caution because it can lead to an artificial “water paint” effect. The noise reduction performs very well and preserves the image detail and sharpness.
To remove chromatic aberrations, apply a local desaturation in the corresponding color channels. The Lens tab of the Raw dialog box provides effective ways of eliminating these aberrations.
To have additional knowledge of Camera raw with Adobe Photoshop CS, purchase a copy of this book. It will sure enlighten the dark areas of the subject matter.

Making Postage Stamps from Your Digital Photos is Easy
Making your own personalized photo stamps is an easy way to add a special touch to your holiday cards, wedding invitations, birth or graduation announcements, and any other special occasion you can think of.
How to Create Personalized Photo Stamps
Some people think customizing photo stamps is complicated, or that they aren't legal postage, but they couldn't be easier to create. And yes, they are valid U.S. Postage. To design your stamp, just upload your digital image to a photo stamp site. There are several; just do an internet search for "photo stamps." Once you've uploaded your photo, you can crop or edit it and add a colorful border. Then choose the value of postage you need and place your order.
Photo stamps are printed on sheets of high-quality self-adhesive paper, typically 20 to a sheet. You can specify the amount of postage for the stamps, from postcards to first class letter rates, as well as priority mail rates. In addition to the face amount of postage, you will pay a service fee based on the number of stamps you order. Generally the more photo stamps you order, the better the price.
What Can You Put on a Stamp?
You can put almost anything (within good taste) on a stamp. Images are reviewed before printing, so be sure to read the website's photo content policy to make sure you're in compliance.
Fun Photo Stamp Ideas:
Holiday stamps - A photo of your kids in Halloween costume, your own stamp to commemorate Christmas, Valentine's Day or other holidays.
Weddings - Put a photo of you and your spouse-to-be on your save-the-date cards, wedding invitations, RSVP cards or thank-you notes. They also make unique bridesmaid and attendant gifts.
Baby Announcements - Show off your newborn with his or her own stamp. These are great for birth announcements or first birthday party invitations.
Special Occasions - Birthday and anniversary parties, graduations, family reunions, thank-you notes, etc.
Family - Create your stamp using a vacation picture or a family photo.
Original Art - Show off your artistic talent with a stamp of your own art or illustration, nature or landscape photo.
Pets - Commemorate your four-legged friend, feathered friend, or your goldfish with its own stamp.
Business - Photo stamps are also creative marketing tools for businesses. Companies can create special stamps for new product rollouts, business logos, product photos, and promotional advertising.
Hobbies - you can get stamps with the logo of your favorite NFL team or put your favorite car or truck on a stamp.
Digitally Experiencing Photographs
Our world is turning digital in a big way. Take the example of photography. Most of us now own digital cameras that are an advancement on our older cams. The old film-using camera is slowly becoming obsolete. When buying a new camera, people are overwhelmingly choosing the digicam instead of cameras that use film. The only occasional photographers who still go to the camera shop to get the film reel developed are those who have not yet got rid of the old cameras. But the rest of the click-happy world can't seem to get enough of the revelation that we call the digicam.
Going digital with our photography has resulted in several unexpected issues. For instance, the photo frames of the days of yore have been bearing the brunt. We do not get our photographs developed anymore. Instead, we end up loading the pictures on to our computers. I agree that this is rather convenient, but there is a charm associated with strategically placing frames on our dining room walls. That charm had all but disappeared from our lives. At least, till the latest photography gadget made its appearance.
The digital photo frame means a lot to those of us who would love to give pride of place to our high resolution photographs. Besides, these digital frames allow us to present a slide show of all our best photos. Isn't that an improvement over the unwieldy photo albums that insisted on taking up so much space? Moreover, a digital photo frame can even play videos, and has sound. Plus, a number of these new age photo frames come with a remote control of their own. Looking through photos has taken on a whole new meaning.
Do not get put off by the idea that digital photo frames can never compete with their non-digital mates with respect to the appearance. Some of the latest digital photo frames can give your old frames a run for their money. At the same time, these digi frames are usually a little expensive. However, if you are a gadget lover, you probably will be rushing to the stores to find out what it is all about.
When shopping for this cool device, make sure you consider the screen size, aspect ratio, and resolution of the frames you like. Not all frames have a large memory. You may need to get a memory card for it if you want your frame to display more pictures. Do a little research prior to buying that neat, little gadget.
Photography with the End in Mind
Beginning with the end in mind. Amidst the steady stream of photographers launching new businesses, it’s refreshing to find something original – especially when it’s something so simple.
Photographers take hundreds of pictures at an average photo shoot, and then spend hours editing the photos to make them look just right. But what is just right? Black and white? Sepia? Color with blown out saturations? Cropped traditionally or using alternative, edgy styles? Effects or no effects? Do consumers know exactly what they’re looking for when they select a photographer? Or do they leave these decisions to the discretion of the photographer?
Enter “This Photo Story” based in Grand Rapids, Michigan (www.thisphotostory.com). Before Mindy Peterson, owner, takes a single picture at a photo shoot, she meets with the client with one goal in mind – to figure out how they’re hoping to use their pictures. She begins with the end in mind. If the customer is looking to decorate their child’s bedroom, wall colors help determine outfit selection, pass times determine the content, and personality influences the style. If they’re looking for something in their living room, then home décor and empty space helps determine the size and mood of the pictures.
Mindy Peterson also gives her clients the option of an extended session to include a home planning session. She comes to this additional 2 ½ hour session with sample collages to hang on the wall, mattes and photo samples to determine the size and style of frames that look best in their space, and a whole lot of creativity. Scheduling a photo shoot is often the easy part. But when it comes to arranging pictures on shelves or hanging them on walls, it too often means a lot of trips back to the store to return items that weren’t quite right. With this mobile, hands-on work station, Mindy helps her customers find the solution they were really hoping for delivering much more than just the pictures.
This Photo Story. A new business concept based upon something so simple – learning what the customers are really looking for before trying to provide it for them. Sometimes they just want a picture. Often, they’re looking for more. They might want their room to look like the one in the latest Pottery Barn catalog. Or they may want their house to feel more like their home.
Photography Q&A: Types Of Photography Equipment
by: Travis Partrige
* What are the different types of cameras?
There are six types of cameras available today in conventional film cameras, and some of these types are also available in the more sophisticated digital cameras. These are:
Single use cameras, commonly called disposable cameras
Compact lens-shutter cameras
Bridge cameras
Rangefinders
Twin lens reflex cameras
Single lens reflex cameras
* How does a conventional camera work?
A conventional camera has three elements to make it work. The optical element or lens, the chemical element or film, and the mechanical element or the camera body itself. Here are the basic parts of a conventional camera and its functions:
- The lens – It is a curved piece of glass or plastic that takes the beams of light bouncing off an object and redirects them to the camera operator’s eye.
- The film – Its job is to record the image the camera operator sees by chemically recording the pattern of light from the image. A film has a collection of tiny light-sensitive grains that record the light by chemically reacting to it.
- The camera body – Basically, exposing light to the film is not enough to get a picture. The film also needs to be protected from being exposed too long to light. A camera is a sealed box with shutter between the lens and the film; the shutter controls the amount light that comes in through the lens.
Too much light exposed to the film means the picture will look completely washed out, and not enough light exposed to the film will produce photos that are too dark. A conventional camera also has a part called a diaphragm and a shutter speed the photographer can control.
* How does a digital camera work?
A digital camera works much like a conventional camera. It has a series of lenses to focus light to create an image of an object or scene. However, instead of using film to record the light emitted by an object, it uses a semiconductor device that records the light electronically.
A digital camera is much more convenient if you want to email your photos to a friend, because you can produce instant photos without chemically processing the film, printing it onto photo paper and then having to use a scanner to email it.
* What equipment do I need with a conventional camera?
The equipments you need with a conventional camera depends on whether you are a professional photographer or a recreational photographer. The equipment you need for conventional cameras are:
- Camera bag
- Lens kit
- Lens bag
- Lens cap
- Flash kit
- Film canister
- Spare film
You can also buy film-developing equipment if you prefer to process your photographs yourself.
* What equipment do I need with a digital camera?
With digital cameras, the equipment you need is much the same as with a conventional camera but without the film and film canister. Here is the basic equipment needed with a digital camera:
- Camera bag
- Lens kit
- Lens bag
- Lens cap
- Flash kit
- USB connector
If you want to print it on photo paper you do not need chemicals for it. All you need are:
- Computer
- Computer printer
- USB connector
- Photo paper
* Do I need a tripod?
Not necessarily. Professional photographers commonly use a tripod to enable them to focus more accurately on the subject. Tripods are used in studios and at events, like weddings, that require precision photography.
Slow Shutter Speeds and Long Exposure Photography
by: Rick Blythe
Many new cameras will come with built-in shutter speeds of up to 30 seconds or longer, which is enough for most long-exposure photography. Other cameras will have a B (bulb) setting that will keep the shutter open as long as you keep your finger on the shutter release button or a T (time) exposure setting that will keep the shutter open until you press the shutter release button a second time. Cameras with bulb settings can also be fitted with a locking cable release so that it isn't necessary to keep your finger on the shutter for long exposures. If your camera doesn't have a cable release, you can use the self-timer option found on most cameras. This will eliminate camera vibration from your hands.
A tripod, or something to rest your camera on, is essential because the camera must be completely still during the time that the shutter is open. If you want to make a fast-moving car blur as it speeds by you, a relatively fast shutter speed of 1/20 of a second may give you the results you are after, however, if you want to make stars in the nighttime sky look like glowing rings as the earth rotates, your exposure may last all night.
The light meter on your camera may not be able to accurately judge the best aperture setting for longer shutter speeds, especially in low-light situations, so your best bet is probably to "bracket." This means taking up to six pictures of the same subject, but doubling the shutter speed each time. This will give you a variety of effects and exposures and allow you to choose the best shot. In general, slow shutter speeds will allow a lot of light into the camera, which means that you will want to use a small aperture (ie. f/22) to avoid over-exposing the shot. In bright daylight it will be necessary to use the lowest ISO available and a neutral density filter to cut the light down.
Some great effects and shutter speeds to try are:
Moving stars: several hours
Moving cars at night: 10 seconds
Waterfalls: 4 seconds +
Amusement park rides: 1 second
Photography And The Cell Phone
by: Roberto Sedycias
Nearly every modern cell phone (telefone celular) has a camera feature. Though they are far away from modern age digital camera, cell phone cameras can still be used to produce good quality photographs.
The cell phone (telefone celular) has some additional features that are not yet available on digital cameras and so may even be able to provide some advantages. The best way to obtain quality photographs is to understand the specifications that are available on these devices, enabling you to make an informed decision when choosing your mobile product, ensuring that it meets your requirements.
The size of the cell phone (telefone celular) screen will affect the quality of viewing on your phone only. It will not affect the quality of your photograph when downloaded to your computer. However, the pixels that your cell phone camera uses will affect the quality of the image a great deal. The minimum resolution you should use is 1.0 mega pixels if photographic images are an important feature for you.
Higher resolution of 3.0 mega pixels and up is available on current cell phones (telefone celular). The higher the number of pixels, the better quality the photographic image will be when reproduced. This is because the pixels are the amount of dots used to create the image; the more that are used, the less the image will break up when enlarged.
The memory size of your device will directly affect the number of photographs that you can store. This will affect your output, and also give you less scope for getting that perfect shot. Your device will detail how much memory it contains, and this amount is usually very low, to store only a few photographic images.
However, the memory capacity can be supplemented by purchasing a memory card that is compatible with your cell phone (telefone celular). The largest currently available is as much as 2 Gigabytes, which can store large numbers of photographs. The exact number will vary as the number of pixels directly affects the amount of memory used. The settings of your picture image can often be changed also. The picture quality is better the higher the resolution you choose. Lower resolutions take up less memory and so can be useful if you just want to send images to friends and family, if are running low on space or if the quality is not of importance.
It is also important that you can store your pictures. If you purchase a cell phone memory card (telefone celular), make sure that it also be compatible with your computer or that it can be hooked up to a USB that is computer compatible. Your device should also come with a USB that you can use to download your pictures. This enables you to clear your cell phone regularly, maximising the use of the camera feature. Once stored, your photographs can be manipulated using programs such as Photoshop, as with any other photographic image.
A major advantage of a camera is that it can be used to send pictures direct to friends and family with a compatible cell phone (telefone celular). These can be sent via multi media messages, which although relatively expensive are now appearing in cell phone contracts as part of a package.
Digital photos can also be sent via email if the cell phone (telefone celular) is internet enabled. Any photographic image can be sent for free via infra red or Bluetooth to another compatible device. This is an excellent way of sharing images, without the need for downloading first, which is both fast and functional. This means cell phones do have an advantage over other photographic devices to a degree, as they do not yet have this feature.

Stock Photos Allow Both Amateur and Professional Photographers to Profit
Today the two major types of photography sold on the market include assignment photography and stock photography. Photographs taken of a predetermined subject are called assignment photography, while stock photography is when one takes photos with the desire to find a future buyer.
Both Amateur and Professional photographers generally can sell both types, and while assignment photography typically takes care of their base costs they find it to be self-limiting in profit potential. Stock photos, however, while generally commanding a lower price, sell more often and to a wider market. A good site to sell your stock photos is http://www.PhotoDaisy.com
If you think you might want to try your hand at making money with stock photography, it’s a good idea to know what kind of photography interests you and in what aspect of photography you have talent. As you hone your skill, you can start to amass a stockpile of photos. That beautiful landscape pictures you took of the setting sun during last months trip to the beach, the pictures of your garden, or the pottery your spouse made, or with a written model release, even the pictures you shot of someone using a cell phone, or typing on a laptop can all be potential stock photos.
A magazine may be doing an article on gardens or on the dangers of driving while using a cell phone. A newspaper might need pictures of the local coastline. Take pictures of everything. Photos you have about police actions can be quite profitable. Other highly popular stock photo subjects also include certain types of plants, food, cars, and boats. Amass a photo library with varied photos. With your good stock photos, the possibilities are endless.
Often, however, photograph editors in magazines and newspapers often don’t have the time or the inclination to expand much effort when buying stock photography. So basically you need to find someone who will market and sell your pictures for you. Think about this – the larger the website, the less time a photo editor will have to spend looking for the right photo and the greater chance your stock photo will be viewed and possibly purchased.
In picking out a service to sell your stock photos you are looking for functionality and affordability. You will need to be able to sell your stock photos and the interface of the website must be one that is not only easy for you to upload your stock photos, but is also easy for those who wish to buy stock photos.
With the advent of the Internet, the business of buying stock photos and selling stock photos has greatly increased. Whether you are an amateur stock photographer or a professional stock photographer, the potential for making a profit from selling stock photos is substantial enough to warrant your attention.
